EVENNETT, Annie Margaret (1868-1894)

Born Margaret Anne LANG on 22 June 1868, to Ross and Ellen/Emily Eleanor (née Pressick/Prescott/Preston), at Bowen, Qld. She married Charles Henry (or maybe Charles Clements?) EVENNETT (various spellings) who was born in Rockhampton (circa 1866?).  They married on 11 Aug 1885, in Muttaburra.

The first child found registered, Daisy Eleanor, was born in Muttaburra on 13 Aug 1887.  At this time, Charles was a 21yo carpenter, and Annie was 20yo. The other children found registered are Arthur Ernest, born 9 Mar 1891, and Effie Florence, born 19 Nov 1893.  Both were very likely born in Muttaburra, and Effie Florence was around just 5 months old when Annie died.  (There may also have been 2 deceased male babies.)

From the Post Office Directories, it appears that Charles may have been working at the Muttaburra hospital in 1892/93, and at that they may have been living up there for a time.

Annie is buried in Muttaburra Cemetery in an unknown grave, but she is remembered by a plaque near the gates to the cemetery.

Charles left the Muttaburra Electoral Roll in Sept 1897.  No more is known of him, but when Daisy married John HOWARD (from Victoria) in Cairns in 1909, it seems her father was in Papua New Guinea.

The Lang family came to Qld on the ‘Golden Dream’ in May 1863:

Ross Lang, 47yo

Ellen Lang, 32yo

William, 13yo

John, 11yo

Fanny, 7yo

George, 4yo

Ross, infant — then they had at least 2 more daughters (Mary and Annie) in Queensland.

The father to Annie and Fanny, Ross Snr, died in Bowen in 1882, exactly 12 months to the day before Fanny’s suicide, and their mother died in Muttaburra in 1889.

It seems William married in 1882 to Sarah Ann Carrington and had about 6 children.  When he died in 1892, he was a baker at Millchester near Charters Towers.

George appears to have married Ellen Dwyer in 1885, and also had about 6 children.  He died suddenly in 1898 at the Millchester bakery.  He had been at one time a grazier near Bowen, then a baker in Charters Towers, but then maybe took over William’s bakery after William died.

In lists of claimants to Wills of these 2 and to Ross Snr, no mention is made of John or Ross Jnr, so it is not known what became of them, or of Mary who was born in Qld in 1864.
