Thunderstorm Tragedy In Far West
LONGREACH. February 3.
Hedley Walsh, 30, single, overseer at Weewondilla station, Muttaburra, was struck dead by lightning yesterday afternoon during a thunderstorm, Walsh at the time was walking and leading a horse while driving sheep from Brompton, another property under the same ownership, to Weewondilla. Portion of his clothing was burnt from his body and his death appears to have been instantaneous. A youth, John Mann, who was with Walsh, escaped injury and the horse was also uninjured. The deceased was a member of an old family resident at Noomin and Rowena, New South Wales. He had been in the Muttaburra district for the past seven years, six of which were with the Dowlings, of Roseberry Downs. He accepted his present appointment only last month. He was prominent in sporting and social activities at Muttaburra and was secretary of the Muttaburra Bachelors’ Ball Committee. The body was taken to Muttaburra today and the funeral will leave the Roman Catholic Church there this afternoon.
