OBITUARY WALTER JAMES BARRETT
Memories of old Mount Cornish days were revived by the death in Muttaburra on 15th inst. of Mr. Walter James Barrett at the age of 82 years. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Barrett of Melbourne, and was a cousin of the late Sir James Barrett, the well-known Collins Street eye specialist, Chancellor of the Melbourne University and President of the Victorian Branch of the B.M.A.
The late Mr. W. J. Barrett came to Mt. Cornish in 1893 and was associated with the late Mr. E. R. Edkins in the working of that vast property for many years. He had resided in the district since his arrival, except for a period as manager of the cattle portion of Elderslie, under the late Mr. William Sloggatt, then controller of that run. Later he returned to Mt. Cornish and resided at the Crossmore outstation. He also was in charge on various droving trips with LC5 cattle to Bourke and other southern destinations. In recent years he has resided at Brookwood, an association fostered by the friendship always existing between the Brookes and Barrett families, in Melbourne.
A few days prior to his death he came into Muttaburra where his demise occurred peacefully in his sleep. He was a very popular member of the community and in his younger days enjoyed all that life had to offer, infecting others with this excellent sprit. He never married.
