GRAZIER KILLED
DEATH OF MR. S. ZLOTKOWSKI
The death occurred in the Muttaburra District Hospital at 7.30 p.m. on Thursday following an accident which occurred that morning, of Mr. Stanalas Zlotkowski, a well-known grazier of the Muttaburra district. He was breaking up with explosives some coolibah logs to make charcoal for his gas producers at about 11 a.m. on Thursday and, while standing about 30 yards from a dry log in which a charge had been put, a piece flew out and hit him in the head, inflicting serious injuries. He was taken to the Muttaburra Hospital but was beyond medical aid.
Mr. Zlotkowski, who was 42 years of age, came from the Moree district of New South Wales, his father being a solicitor in that town. He selected Ashra Downs, his home, in 1928 when that property was resumed from Mt. Cornish. Later he purchased Hardington, also a portion of Mt. Cornish, and more recently, following the death of the late Mr. A. Tait, Mrs. Zlotkowski purchased Wilton.
Prior to coming to Queensland deceased had grazing interests in New South Wales and was also interested in a grazing property on the Condamine River district, in Southern Queensland. Mr. Zlotkowski was educated at the North Shore School, Sydney, and served in the Great War enlisting at the age of 18 years.
He was a prominent member of the Muttaburra platoon of the V.D.C. holding the rank of sergeant. Deceased was most enterprising and, when he purchased Hardington, he demonstrated the value of a desert country by developing that property and sinking a series of sub artesian bores, which generally were most successful.
He married in New South Wales, a cousin, Miss Kattarina Zlotkowski, by whom he is survived and there are two children, Paul (9) and Fiona (6). The funeral took place at Muttaburra on Friday afternoon and was attended by members of the Muttaburra platoon of the V.D.C., also representatives of the Longreach platoons, Muttaburra being attached to “A” Company with headquarters at Longreach. “A” Company was represented by the 2 I/C, Mr. R.G. Stormonth. The battalion, with headquarters at Longreach, was represented by 2 I/C Mr. A. H. Campbell. Rev. C. E. Torlach of the Church of England, Longreach, officiated at the graveside.
